“It worked perfectly before the update.” True, and that is precisely the problem: the update asked the iPad for more than it could still give.
An iPadOS update rewrites a large part of the memory and draws heavily on the battery. On an iPad several years old, that is sometimes the moment an existing weakness shows itself.
The causes we find
The battery: too weak to hold the voltage during installation; the iPad reboots or stays black. A new battery, and the installation resumes.
The NAND memory: failing sectors appear during the rewrite. The typical symptom is error 4013 or 4014 during a restore. The repair means replacing or reprogramming the memory; the data is then lost, unless we manage to copy it first.
A power component at its limit, giving way under the load of the installation. Component-level repair, 149 €.
Our priorities
If you have no backup, we first try to get the iPad booting as it is to make one. We never restore, never erase without your written agreement. Only then do we repair for good.
Before an update
Battery above 50% and plugged in, iCloud or computer backup done the day before, and no update the night before a trip. That goes for the iPhone too.
